Past Perfect Tense Definition
Definition: অতীতে সম্পন্ন হওয়া দুটি কাজের মধ্যে যে কাজটি আগে সম্পন্ন হয়েছে তাকে Past Perfect Tense বলে।
Two actions simultaneously happened in the past, the Past Perfect Tense is the one which was done before.
Explanation:
উদাহরণ টি লক্ষ্য করুন, “ডাক্তার আসার আগেই রোগী মারা গেল।”– The patient had died before the doctor came.
এখানে, অতীতের দুটো কাজ নির্দেশ করছে।
১। রোগী মারা গেল
২। ডাক্তার আসল
কোন কাজটি আগে হয়েছে? নিশ্চয় রোগী মারা গেল-The patient had died- এটা Past Perfect Tense হবে।
তারপর কি হলো? – ডাক্তার আসল-The doctor came- এটা Past Simple হবে।
মূল বাক্যটি হবে– ডাক্তার আসার আগেই রোগী মারা গেল- The patient had died + before+ the doctor came.
Past Perfect Tense Structure
Sub1 + had+ Verb3+ Ext+ before+ Sub2+ Past Simple+ Ext
Example: I had learnt English before you went to London
বাক্যর অংশ দুটোকে আগে পরে করেও লিখা যায় যেমনঃ
Before you went to London, I had learnt English.
N.B: Before যুক্ত অংশ বা Clause টি বাক্যের শুরুতে লিখলে এই Clause এর শেষে একটা কমা (,) দিতে হবে।
More Example:
1. I had bought a mobile phone before I bought a computer
Or, Before I bought a computer, I had bought a mobile phone.
2. They had finished the work before the sun set.
Or, Before the sun set, they had finished the work.
Past Perfect Tense- এ After এর ব্যবহার
বাক্যটি After ব্যবহার করেও লিখা বা বলা যাবে। লক্ষ্য করুন।
মূল বাক্যঃ ডাক্তার আসার আগেই রোগী মারা গেল।
After যোগেঃ রোগী মারা যাওয়ার পর ডাক্তার আসল।
এবার বাক্যটি ভেঙ্গে ভেঙ্গে করা যাক,
রোগী মারা যাওয়ার পর- After the patient had died
ডাক্তার আসল- The doctor came.
সম্পূর্ণ বাক্যঃ রোগী মারা যাওয়ার পর ডাক্তার আসল- After the patient had died, the doctor came.
বাক্যের Clause দুটো আগে পরে দেয়া যাবে যেমনঃ
The doctor came+ after+ the patient had died.
More Examples:
1. After I had finished my graduation, I got a job.
Or, I got a job after I had finished my graduation.
2. After they had completed their work, they went home.
Or, They went home after they had completed their work.
N.B: After যুক্ত অংশ বা Clause টি বাক্যের শুরুতে লিখলে এই Clause এর শেষে একটা কমা (,) দিতে হবে।
লক্ষ্যনীয়ঃ বাক্যটি Before দিয়ে করুন বা After দিয়ে করুন। মূল কথা হলো যে কাজটা আগে হয়েছে সেটা Past Perfect-এ রাখতে হবে এবং যে কাজটা পরে হয়েছে সেটা Past Simple-এ রাখতে হবে।

1. The students had entered the class room before the teacher came.
2. We had eaten dinner before father came home.
3. I had learnt English before I went abroad.
4. They went home after they had finished their work.
5. We had arrived at the airport before the plane took off.
6. After I had applied for the job, they called me for an interview.
