Would এর ব্যবহার
Would হলো Will এর Past Tense এবং একটি Modal Auxiliary. Would Modal টি Will এর Past tense হলেও, Would দিয়ে শুধুমাত্র অতীতের কোন কাজ বুঝাবে এমন টা নয়। Modal Verb হিসেবে Would এর ব্যবহার ব্যাপক। বিস্তারিত আলোচনা করা হলো।
Examples:
√ I would like some coffee, please.
√ We’d like some advice, please.
√ Would your daughter like to play with my girl?
Would এর Contraction সমূহ জেনে নিইঃ
- I Would = I’d
- We Would = We’d
- You Would = You’d
- They Would = They’d
- He Would = He’d
- She Would = She’d
- It Would = It’d
Interpersonal: Softer/Polite Request/Offers (ভদ্র/নম্র ভাবে কিছু বুঝাতে……..)
√ I would like some coffee, please.
√ We’d like some advice, please.
√ Would your daughter like to play with my girl?
√ Would you close the door, please.
√ If you would follow me this way.
√ Would you like beef or would you prefer chicken
√ Would you pass the salt, please?
√ Would you give me a hand, please?
√ Would you do me a favoure?
Indirect Speech-এ Would এর ব্যবহার
Direct: He will come tomorrow.
Indirect: He said that he would come the next day.
N.B: Direct থেকে Indirect করার সময় Would অপরিবর্তিত থাকে।
Direct: Would you need anything?
Indirect: He asked me if I would need anything.
Would Vs Used to
Used to = অতীতের সেসকল কাজ/অভ্যাস যেগুলো এখন আর exist করে না, সেগুলোকে refer করে। কিন্তু Would এর ক্ষেত্রে এরুপ বাধ্যবাদকতা নেই।
Example:
Correct: I used to have an old CASIO wrist watch. (অতীতে আমার Casio ঘড়ি ছিল, এখন নেই বুঝাতে Would হয়েছে )
Incorrect: I would have an old CASIO wrist watch. (অতীতে ছিল, এখন নেই এইরুপ বুঝাতে Would ব্যবহৃত হয় না। নিচের উদাহরণ দুটোও একই বার্তা নির্দেশ করছে। )
Correct: He used to play tennis a lot after school.
Incorrect: He would play tennis a lot after school.
Correct: I used to smoke. = Not (I would smoke)
Conditional Sentence-এ Would এর ব্যবহারঃ
If যুক্ত Clause টি Past tense হলে অপর Clause টি Sub + would + Verb (present) + ………. হয়।
Example:
√ If I knew your address, I would write you a letter. (যদি তোমার ঠিকানা জানতাম তাহলে তোমাকে চিঠি লিখতাম। Means: তোমার ঠিকানা জানি না। )
= I would write you a letter if I knew your address. (Vice-Versa)
If যুক্ত Clause টি Past perfect tense হলে অপর Clause টি Sub + would have + Verb (pp) + ………. হয়।
Example:
√ If I had known that you were coming, I would have cooked more dishes for you. (আমি যদি জানতাম যে তোমরা আসতেছ তাহলে তোমাদের জন্য আরো রান্না করতাম। Means: তোমরা যে আসবে সেটা আমি জানতেই পারলাম না। )
= I would have cooked more dishes for you if I had known that you were coming. (Vise-versa)
Typical Behavior Use:
অতীতের কোন ব্যতিক্রম/বিশেষ কাজ বুঝাতে Would এর ব্যবহার :
√ When he was young, he would sing a lot at the back seat in the classroom. (স্কুল কলেজের ক্লাসরুমে পড়াশুনা হবে এটাই স্বাভাবিক। কিন্তু সেখানে কেউ গান করলে সেটা বিশেষ কাজ। তবে গানের স্কুল হলে সেখানে গান করবেই, এটা ভিন্ন কথা। )
√ Sometimes she would come to my house to see me without informing us.
√ On Monday, we would go the river for swimming.
Future in the past: (অতীতকালে ভবিষ্যতের ঘটনা বুঝাতে………
এই পয়েন্ট টা বুঝতে উদাহরণ গুলো বার বার পড়বেন এবং একটু Imagination করবেন, ইনশাআল্লাহ! বুঝে ফেলবেন। )
√ In Dhaka, he first met the girl whom he would marry one day.
(Explanation: ঢাকায় সে মেয়েটির সাথে প্রথম দেখা করল যাকে ভবিষ্যতের কোন একদিন সে বিয়ে করবে। অর্থাৎ অতীতে ভবিষ্যতের ঘটনার বর্ণনা।
To be more clear: যখন সে দেখা করেছিল তখনও সে মেয়েটিকে বিয়ে করে নি, পরবর্তীতে কোন সময় হয়তো তাকে সে বিয়ে করেছিল। ব্যাপার টা আরো ক্লিয়ার বুঝার জন্য নিচের উদাহরণ টা দেখুন। )
√ Steve Jobs knew that he would be the next story teller in the tech industry.
(স্টিভ জবস জানতো যে, টেকনোলোজীর জগতে সে-ই পরবর্তী স্টোরি টেলার/নায়ক/ লিডার হতে যাচ্ছে। সে স্বপ্ন দেখেছে, সে একজন সফল ব্যবসায়ী/জিনিয়াস হবে, এবং এটা একটা অতীতের ঘটনা। ব্যাপার টা এই। )
√ There was a chance that I would get the job. (আমি জব টা পাব এরকম একটা সুযোগ ছিল। )
