আমরা যে, বাংলা ভাষায় বাগধারা ব্যবহার করি, Phrase & Idioms গুলো অনেকটাই বাগধারার মতো। Native English ভালোভাবে না বুঝার আরেকটা বড় কারন হলো আমরা Native Idioms গুলো জানি না। আপনি যতই Native Idioms & phrase জানবেন আপনি ততই ইংরেজী কথোপকথনে বৈচিত্র আনতে পারবেন এবং Native ইংলিশ বুঝার দক্ষতা বাড়বে। এই আর্টিকেলে বাছাইকৃত এবং বহুল ব্যবহ্রত ১০০ টি Native Idioms & Phrase বাংলা অর্থসহ উদাহরনের সাহায্যে তুলে ধরা হলো আশা করি উপকৃত হবেন।
1. A drop in the ocean– প্রয়োজনের তুলনায় অতি সামান্য।
Tk. 5,000 is a drop in the ocean to maintain a middle class family with it.
2. Add fuel to the fire– কোন খারাপ অবস্থাকে আরো অবনতি করা।
Don’t try to find fault with him at this moment. You are actually adding fuel to the fire.
3. Ball is in somebody’s court– কোন সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে নিজের প্রভাব থাকা
I can start my business now because the ball is in my court.
4. Barking up the wrong tree– ভুল কাজ করা
I’m not responsible for the problem. You are barking up the wrong tree.
5. Be a good catch– বিবাহের জন্য যোগ্যপার্থী হওয়া
Samira is a good catch. I hope I’ll propose her soon.
6. Beat around the bush– সোজাসুজি না বলে ঘুরিয়ে পেছিয়ে কথা বলা।
Don’t try to beat around the bush. Tell me straight what you want to say.
7. Bend over backward- প্রয়োজনের চেয়ে অতিরিক্ত কাজ করা/শ্রম দেয়া।
The service provider is bending over backwards to satisfy its customer.
8. Bite of more than You can chew- সাধ্যের বাইরে কাজের দ্বায়িত্ব নেয়া।
You can never finish your work because You bit off more they can chew.
9. Blew somebody away- কোন কিছু দ্বারা মুগ্ধ করা/মুগ্ধ হওয়া
The design of this product blew me away. I’ve never seen such a design before.
10. Cry over spilt milk- অতীতের কথা ভেবে মন খারাপ করা।
There is no way to spend time just by crying over spilt milk.
11. Cry wolf- অপ্রয়োজনে সাহায্য চাওয়া।
My new colleague is constantly crying wolf.
12. Crunch time- খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সময় যখন কোন প্রজেক্ট শেষ হওয়ার ঠিক আগমূহর্তে যে তড়িঘড়ি করে কাজ করতে হয়- এই সময়টা।

13. Cut corners- কোন মতে দায়সারা করে কাজ সম্পন্ন করা।
We don’t have much time. So, we need to cut corners while building this new office.
14. Dig in your heels/Stick to your minds– নিজের সিদ্ধান্তে অটল থাকা।
My parents wanted me to study chemistry but I dug in my heels and took English at University.
15. Down to the wire– শেষ সময় পর্যন্ত।
As tomorrow is the deadline of our project we need to work down to the wire.
16. Drive someone up the wall– কাউকে বিরক্ত করা।
When he speaks with his loud voice it drives me up the wall.
17. Get out of hand- নিয়ন্ত্রন হারানো।
The class got out of hand and the students started to make a noise.
18. Get your head around it- বুজতে পারা।
I just can’t get my head around the fact that my father is not buying me a football where he bought my younger brother a cricked bet.
19. Give the benefit of the doubt– প্রমাণ ছাড়া কারো কথা বিশ্বাস করা।
I know you for many days. So I am giving you the benefit of the doubt.
20. Go down in flames- সবার স্বচক্ষে হঠাৎ করে থেমে যাওয়া বা ব্যর্থ হওয়া।
Our business will go down in flames if we don’t take these new startup seriously.
21. Hear on the grapevine- কোন আজগুবি বা অসত্য কথা শুনা।
I heard on the grapevine that our principal will leave our college.
22. Hit the books– কঠোর পড়াশুনা করা।
My final exam is coming soon so, I need to hit the books.
23. It takes two to tango- এক হাতে তালি বাজে না।
I don’t think, he did this by himself It takes two to tango.
24. Judge a book by its cover- ব্যহ্যিক আবরন দেখে কাউকে বিচার/বিবেচনা করা।
I bought this product watching their advertisement. It was not up to my expectation. Actually we should not judge a book by its cover.
25. Kill two birds with one stone- এক ঢিলে দুই পাখি মারা।
By cycling to work I kill two birds with one stone. It saves me money and I take exercise.
26. Leave no stone Unturned– চেষ্টার ত্রুটি না রাখা।
I will leave no stone unturned until I find a new job.
27. Let the cat out of the bag- থলের বিড়াল বেরিয়ে আসা অর্থ হঠাৎ গোপন রহস্য প্রকাশিত হওয়া।
When the police arrested the killer, he let the cat out of the the bag about the murder.
28. Make a long story short- সংক্ষেপ করা।
We don’t have much time left. Let us make a long story short.
29. Miss the boat- কোন সুযোগ হারানো।
They didn’t accept our proposal. I think we have missed the boat.
30. Once in blue moon- কদাচিৎ/কখনোই না।
Without studying hard, you can only achieve such a good result once in a blue moon.
31. Piece of cake- সহজেই করা যায়/সহজেই পাওয়া যায়।
Learning English is not a piece of cake if you don’t give much effort.
32. Pull a rabbit out of a hat- অপ্রত্যাশিত কিছু করা।
Adnan failed in 5 subjects out of 8 last year. But he stood 2nd in our board this year. He just pulled a rabbit out of a hat.
33. Pull yourself together- শান্ত হয়ে স্বাভাবিক ভাবে কাজকর্ম করা।
Now, I understand that you have had a bad day, but pull yourself together and get on with your new job, things gonna be okay.
34. Run on flames- ক্লান্ত হওয়া সত্বেও জেগে থাকা।
I haven’t slept enough for few days because I’m running on flames to meet my deadline.
35. Sell somebody out- কারো গোপন তথ্য ফাসকরে দেয়া।
He promised me to keep the information secret but he sold me out. I won’t believe him anymore.
36. Shoot from the hip- সরাসরি/সজাসুজি কথা বলা।

37. Sit on the fence- নিরপেক্ষ থাকা।
There is a debate between Brazil and Argentina on who will win but I am still sitting on the fence.
38. Step up your game- কোন কাজ ভাল করতে শুরু করা।
If you really want to improve your spoken English, you will have to seriously step up your game from now.
39. When pigs fly- অসম্ভব ব্যাপার।
As long as our new boss is in our company, our company will be benefited when pigs fly.
40. Whole nine yards- সবকিছু বিবেচনায় নিয়ে।
No matter how difficult it is to run a business. I will go the nine yards.
41. Your guess is as good as mine- কোন ধারনা না থাকা/ সঠিক উত্তর জানা না থাকা।
We don’t have enough knowledge about the new device. I don’t know how to operate it. Your guess is as good as mine.
42. Hit the sack- ঘুমাতে যাওয়া।
It is time for me to hit the sack. I am very tired!
43. Twist someone’s arm- কাউকে কোন কাজে কনভিন্স করা/ রাজি করানো।
Because of having Examination in the next day, I did not want go the party tonight but somehow he twisted my arm.
44. Stab someone in the back- কারো অসাক্ষাতে গোপনে ক্ষতি করা।
He has a habit of stabbing others in the back. He told the boss secretly that “we are not sincere in our work”
45. Lose your touch- কারো কোন বিশেষ দক্ষতা হারিয়ে ফেলা।
I don’t understand why the students are not listening to me. I just lost my touch in controlling the class.
46. Sit tight- সামনে কোন তাড়া নেই তাই নিশ্চিন্তে সময় কাটানো/ দীর্ঘ সময় ধরে কোন কিছুর জন্য অপেক্ষা করা।
My examination is over. Now I can sit tight for my result.
47. Pitch in- সবাই মিলে কোন কাজে অংশ নেয়া।
Our friend Samira’s marriage ceremony is on next Friday. We all can pitch in and buy her something great.
48. Go cold turkey- হঠাৎ করে কোন বদ অভ্যাস বা খারাপ কাজ করা ছেড়ে দেয়া।
He suddenly stopped smoking. He just went cold turkey.
49. Face the music- বাস্তবতার সম্মুখীন হওয়া।
I failed in two subjects in last semester. University Authority has called in my dad. Now I need to face the music.
50. Ring a bell- স্মরন করিয়ে দেয়া/ মনে করিয়ে দেয়া।
When I see the large mango tree in the campus it rings a bell about our relationship. My girl friend and I spent a lot of time under the tree while dating.
51. Blow off steam- রাগ ঝাড়া।
He had a fight with his sister so he went out to blow off steam.
52. Cut to the chase- সময় স্বল্পতার কারনে বিস্তারিত আলোচনা না করে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয়ে নজর দেয়া/ তুলে ধরা।
As we don’t have enough time to discuss, we need to cut to the chase and focus only on major problems though we know we have a lot of problems.
53. Up in the air- অমিমাংসিত সিদ্ধান্ত/ অনিশ্চিত পরিকল্পনা/ কাজটি আদৌ হবে কিনা সন্দেহ রয়েছে।
Our plan to visit Sydney next month is up in the air because my leave application has not been granted yet.
54. On the Ball- খুব চতুর/সচেতন/ তৎপর ব্যক্তি/দক্ষ/নিয়ন্ত্রনে আছে এমন।
You have already submitted your assignment where I have not started yet. You are really on the Ball.
55. Get over something- কোন কঠিন সময়/ কঠিন পরিস্থিতি কাটিয়ে উঠা।
After many days of his father’s death, he is getting over the shock.
56. Look like a million dollars/bucks- কারো বেশভুষা বা চাল চলনের জন্য একটা বড় ধরনের প্রশংসার প্রকাশ।
Wow! Amazing! You look like a million dollars this evening with your new navy blue suit.
57. Born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth- সোনার চামচ মুখে নিয়ে জন্ম গ্রহন করা।

58. To go from rags to riches- অত্যন্ত গরীব থেকে বিত্তশালী হওয়া- There are a lot of famous actors in the world who went from rags to riches only by their talented works.
59. Pay an arm and a leg for something– ব্য্যবহুল খরচ।
To study abroad now a days you have to pay an arm and a leg for it.
60. To have sticky fingers- হাত টানার অভ্যাস থাকা/ চুরির অভ্যাস।
The boss fired the project manager because he had sticky fingers. He stole more than tk. 10,000 in a month.
61. To give a run for one’s money-প্রতিযোগীতায় জেতার জন্য হাড্ডা হাড্ডি লড়াই করা।
He really gave me a run for my money in the carom tournament. He almost beat me!
62. Break even -লাভ ও হয়নি ক্ষতি ও হয়নি।
The picnic to Cox’s Bazar cost me Tk. 3,000 but I almost broke even after winning Tk. 25,00 prize Bond in the raffle Draw.
63. Break the Bank-খুবই ব্যয়বহুল।
To live in Singapore you need to break the bank.
64. To be closefisted-কৃপণ ।
He is so closefisted that he doesn’t buy a good dress for himself.
65. To go Dutch-কোন রেস্টুরেন্ট এ সবাই এক সাথে খেয়ে নিজ নিজ বিল দেয়া।

66. Midas touch-খুব সহজে টাকা ইনকাম করার দক্ষতা।

67. In the red /In the black-আয়ের চেয়ে ক্ষতি/খরচ বেশী।
After arranging a costly marriage ceremony I am in the red now.
68. Recieve a kickback-অন্যায় ভাবে টাকা গ্রহণ /ঘুষ নেয়া-
After the officer was caught red handed in receiving a kickback, he was sacked by the authority.
69. Live in hand to mouth-দিনে এনে দিনে খায়/প্রচুর টাকা না থাকা।
The rickshaw puller has been living hand to mouth.
70. To be Loaded-অনেক টাকা থাকা/ বিত্তশালী হওয়া.
He bought a brand new car. His family is loaded.
71. Make ends meet-যে কাজের মাধ্যমে জীবিকা নির্বাহ করে।
He doesn’t make much money from his current job. So he needs to work-overtime to make ends meet.
72. Rule of thumb -প্রচলিত কিছু নিয়মকানুন /মূলনীতি যেগুলো মানুষের মুখে মুখে চলে আসছে এবং এই সব নিয়মকানুন বা নির্দেশনার কোন লিখিত রুপ নেই।
As a rule of thumb, I should not speak English on 21st February.

78. In hot water-কোন সমস্যায় পড়া/খারাপ সময় অতিবাহিত করা –
After losing the big project, my company is in hot water now.
79. Compare Apples and Oranges-ভিন্ন জিনিসের সাথে তুলনা করা।
On one hand I’m a freelancer on the other, I’m a Govt. employee. I can’t decide which job I should continue. It’s like compare apples and oranges.
80. Not one’s cup of tea-এটা আমার কাজ না/আমার বিষয় না/ এটাতে আমার কোন আগ্রহ নেই ইত্যাদি।

87. A bad Apple-কোন কমিউনিটি বা গ্রুপে খারাপ ব্যাক্তি যে সবসময় সমস্যার সৃষ্টি করে এবং যাদের খারাপ আচরণ অন্যদের প্রভাবিত করে।
He failed in the examination because he didn’t study at all before his examination. He spent much of his time hanging out with bad apples.
