An open secret (যে গোপন কথা সবার-ই জানা) The news of his taking bribe is an open secret.

An apple of discord (কলহের বিষয়) Their parental property has become an apple of discord between two brothers.

Apple of one’s eyes (নয়নের মনি) The boy is the apple of his father’s eye.

A black sheep (কুলাঙ্গার) You are the black sheep in our family.

A bolt from the blue (বিনা মেঘে বজ্রপাত/আকস্মিক ঘটনা) The news of his mother’s death came to as a bolt form the blue.

A man of letters (পন্ডিত) A man of letters is evaluated by everybody.

A rift in the lute (মত বিরোধ) There is a rift in the lute between two parties.

Idioms and Phrases-A

A far cry (বহু ব্যবধান) It is a far cry to be a doctor for you, you are still in class eight.

A sleeping partner (অর্থ প্রদানকারী নিস্কৃয় অংশীদার) If you want to run a business with a sleeping partner, you may not succeed in your business.

A bird’s eye view (এক নজরে দেখা/ভাসা ভাসা করে দেখা) I had a bird’s eye view on these documents.

A dark hose (অপরিচিত ব্যক্তি) We should not talk about politics with a dark horse.

All ears to (মনোযোগী) I was all ears to the teacher what he said so I could understand the lesson very well.

All moonshine (অসার, ফাকি) Your statement is all moonshine.

All in all  (সর্বেসর্বা) He is all in all in his family.

All on a sudden (হঠাত) All on a sudden he came to my house.

A slow coach (অলস ব্যক্তি) I don’t expect anything from a slow coach like you.

A going concern (চালু ব্যবসা) It is not wise to sell a going concern.

All the same (একই) It is all the same to me whether you stay here or not.

All over with (সব শেষ হওয়া) It is all over with their relationship.

As far as (যতদূর সম্ভব) I work as far as possible.

As long as (যতক্ষন সম্ভব/যতক্ষন পর্যন্ত) I don’t like to eat anything as long as I am not hungry.

As soon as (যত শীঘই) I want to join my new job as soon as possible.

As good as (দুটি বস্তু/ দুই ব্যক্তি একই) The book is as good as your book.

As though (যেন) He behaved as though he were my Boss.

At a discount (যথার্থ মূল্যায়ন না হওয়া) Simplicity is at a discount now a days.

At all costs (যে কোন প্রকারে) He is trying to get the job at all costs.

At arm’s length (দূরে রাখা) Keep the bad boys at arm’s length.

Idioms and Phrases-A

At any rate (যে প্রকারে হোক) Don’t worry, I will try to help you in learning English at any rate.

At a stretch (এক টানা) He can run 10 kilometres at a stretch.

At least (কমপক্ষে/অন্তঃত পক্ষে) If you want to apply for the job, you should have second class at least.

At best (বড় জোর) I can give you Tk. 5000 at best. Rest of the money you need, you have to collect yourself.

At bay (কোণঠাসা) The enemy was at bay.

At a low ebb (নিন্মমুখী) His income is at a low ebb now.

At all hazards (বাঁধা বিপত্তি সত্ত্বেও) You must continue your study at all hazards.

At a loss (কিংকর্তব্যবিমূঢ়) I was at a loss when I saw one of my old friend just came to my home suddenly.

At present (বর্তমানে) At present, I am teaching Spoken English Online.

At sixes and sevens (এলোমেলো) He kept the books at sexes and sevens on the table.

At long last (অবশেষে) At long last, we finished the project.

At the outset (প্রারম্বে) I told you to be alert at the outset.

At the top of (শীর্ষ স্থানে) I am always at the top of my class.

At one’s heel (ঠিক পিছনে থাকা) We will follow you at your heels.

At variance of with (অসংগতি পূর্ণ) His service is at variance of with his words.

At home (দক্ষ/স্বচ্ছন্দ) I feel quite at home in this new place. He is at home in English.
